50 Years of the Father's Day Rod Run

For many Nebraskans, Father’s Day in Ord means classic cars. This year marks the 50th Annual Father’s Day Rod Run, a tradition hosted by the Valley Rods Unlimited Car Club since 1975. What began as a gathering of local automotive enthusiasts has grown into one of central Nebraska’s longest-running car events.

The longevity of the Rod Run reflects the dedication of the club behind it. For decades, Valley Rods Unlimited has celebrated automotive history, a commitment reflected in its headquarters. Club members purchased and restored Carl’s, a former 1921 service station, preserving a piece of Ord’s automotive heritage.

While the clubhouse preserves a piece of Ord’s past, the Father’s Day Rod Run brings automotive history to life each year, showcasing everything from prewar automobiles and postwar classics to muscle cars, street rods, trucks, and motorcycles. Just as importantly, it brings together owners, restorers, and enthusiasts who share the stories and knowledge behind the vehicles.

One of the weekend’s most popular traditions is the parade through downtown Ord. Families line the streets, lawn chairs fill the sidewalks, and former residents return home to take part in the festivities. Over the years, the event has become as much a community celebration as a car show.

As the Father’s Day Rod Run reaches its 50th year, it remains a testament to the volunteers and enthusiasts who have kept the tradition alive for half a century, turning Ord into a rolling celebration of automotive history every Father’s Day weekend. If you’re in central Nebraska this Father’s Day, consider making a stop in Ord and becoming part of the tradition.
